Born
'Anthony Child' in 1971 in the midlands of England.. 'Tony' gained an immediate
ear for electronic sounds, preferring basic sonic qualities over the typical
melody structures. Influences included Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Steve
Reich, Coil and legendary 'krautrockers' Faust. Surgeon soonafter engaged
his avid interest in sound on whatever equipment made itself available.
Beginning his recording career with a basic home studio set up and mainly
self-taught, raw experimentation reigned until 1989 when he relocated to
Birmingham to study audio/visual design.
Gradually segueing into the chaos of the city, Surgeon's early experiments
changed with his landscape. the chaotic sounds born from his rural life
evolved into more disciplined and structural work under the influence of
the Birmingham sprawl. This influence spread deeper in Tony in 1993 when
the Birmingham techno mecca"House of God" made him resident spinner. An
introduction to fellow Birmingham producer Regis of Downwards records in
1995 spawned the first Surgeon productions, and to immediate worldwide acclaim.
The accolades about his experimental recording repertoire were instantaneous
and the electronic music world took immediate note of this vital new talent.
Surgeons' music has a very autobiographical base: reactions to and within
his environment. Speaking for himself about his sound: " Inspiration comes
from my life experience and most importantly, my surroundings. I am expressing
the feelings of living in a city now . People all over the world living
in other cities in decay should be able to identify with these feelings
regardless of their culture, sex or language. the traditional cultural,
lingual and sexual references have been reduced to a more fundamental and
thus powerful level. Hence the album titles Communications' and 'Basic Tonal
Vocabulary', when combined with the power of dance, it's pretty strong stuff.
It's not a new idea but i'm trying to refine it".
In a very brief span of time Surgeon has left his indelible mark on the
dance underground. Releasing his music mainly with Downwards, he can also
be found on Ideal trax, Soma and now Tresor. An array of remix work appears
with De-Construction, Harthouse, Sony (Japan) and internal while his most
notable reworking is D.H.S.'s anthemic"House of God"(Missile):a title identical
to the notorious Birmingham club night Surgeon has commanded since 1993.
Variations of his own productions mysteriously appeared in 1996 as 'THX',
an experimental series of white labels of which only 50 copies were circulated
and subsequently turned the world on its ear. Surgeon launched his own label,
'Dynamic Tension' in ī97, the name of which he has also used to support
his own dj residency at Berlin's famous Tresor club. Additionally, a full
dj schedule throughout the US, Europe, Australia and Japan promises to keep
Surgeon more than busy, as he likes it, this year. His third album on Tresor,
"Form & Force" has just been released on Tresor, so check it out - itīs
worth it! |

Anthony Child returns in long player mode with his most accomplished work
to date. We have had glimpses of the developing Surgeon sound manifesto
on previous works, such as "BasicTonalVocabulary" and "Balance", these were
examples of Mr. Child perfecting his art. "Force + Form" completes the picture,
it makes sense of what he has threatened to do on previous records, it ties
up loose ends and reaffirms his single minded intent to bridge the divide
between his love of experimental electronics and club based tracks abielt
with twist.
The lp uniquely has its parts interwoven, no obvious starts and stops here.
He has refined his club monsters and tweaked his tonal hums. Each tracks
forms connecting sound slabs, rhythms and tonal pieces collide, itīs up
to the listener how they utilize the parts. Surgeons lps have always delivered
the unexpected, "Force + Form" is no different, but as a testament to the
producers vision the album should be viewed as his definitive work. |
