Born
in North London in 1972, Phill was raised in a musical family and it quickly
became apparent that the passion had been inherited. By the time he was
11 he had an addiction for synths.
As a teenager his taste becaome more electronically inclined by the success
of bands such as Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Johnn Jox & Japan. At the age
of 16 he already had a basic collection of analog synths and was playing
in a number of bands.
His love of Detroit Techno/Chicago House emerged from going to the early
warehouse parties and underground clubs in and around London. Back in 1989,
Phill was a well known face at Crowland Rd (NutHouse), Energy and Land of
Oz at Heaven, where the likes of "Evil" Eddie Richards and Mr C were leading
the way.
Knowing that he wanted a career in the industry Phill started work as a
tape op in a studio run by pirate radio station "lightning" who had heard
one of his tapes. In return for his willing and very able assistance during
the day, he was given free studio time and every night he would be locked
in with a sleeping bag and a pot noodle! He would be there for hours indulging
in audio pleasures. Due to the sounds that he was creating, the guys nicknamed
Phill "The Scientist". They were putting on parties with Jumpin Jack Frost
and Bryan G at the time, which did well due to the promotion from their
record shop, Passion and their station Lightning FM.
At "Passion 90" at The Fridge (which was run by this crew) Phill played
live alongside Shut Up and Dance and was heard by GTI Records (now Kickin).
The label introduced Phill to DJ Hype and they formed an alliance creating
tracks such as The Exorcist, The Bee and Champion Squad, continuing to use
the name Scientist amongst others psuedonyms such as Kicksquad.
Through the support of Fantasy FM and other London pirates, their debut
single "The Exorcist" reached No. 1 in the dance charts and was voted Track
of 1990 by Kiss FM. The Scientist toured the UK, Germany, Italy, Switzerland
and Russia playing live and gaining immense TV and press coverage throughout
90 and 91. Phill became recognised as a talented producer and worked freelance
with artistes such as Mica Paris, Malcolm McLaren and Terry Hall. As the
music developed so did Phill. He dropped the name Scientist and the Pure
Science concept evolved...
Pure Science started producing tracks with DJ Nut Nut. Again very successful,
these gained Phill more work on various freelance productions. Phill often
played out live, never failing to impress. The Pure Science label was to
follow, with distribution being carried out on foot by Phill. Exercising
a good rapport with the industry, Phill began licensing his work to Zoom
Records (soon to be Rehab Records). The label instantly gained recognition,
with Muzik Magazine reviewing their recortds and awarding "tracks of the
month".
Rehab has gained the respect of many of the top international DJ's, the
vinyl being played out to many a groovin dance floor. Hard work and consistent
projects led Phill to Lunar Tunes (Eddie Richards label) in 1997 where the
Science continues.....
